Format Wars bio
Format Wars is an instrumental electronic rock trio from Melbourne, Australia. Their music features ambient, electronic soundscapes from analog synthesisers drenched in reverb, delay and tape echo, backed by syncopated, up-front live drums and bass guitar that is alternately delicate, driven, melodic and percussive.
Format Wars explore sounds, rhythm and composition through iterative improvisation and arrangement. Their compositions blend time signatures and rhythms, soundtracking cinematic moments that live outside of films, giving listeners a vast, thematic space to fill with their own meaning.
Many years of iteration led the band to the name, which acknowledges the competing technologies, disciplines and inspirations that have shaped the band’s experimental sound. Format Wars prefer anonymity and control, self-recording and producing their music in their own studio, as well as directing their own artwork and promotion.
